A stable and properly configured power supply is essential for reliable gate operation. Whether you are installing a new TOPENS swing gate opener or converting an existing system, selecting the correct AC, solar, or hybrid (AC + solar) power configuration ensures consistent performance and long-term reliability.

This guide explains common power conversion scenarios, required components, and model-specific power recommendations for TOPENS swing gate openers.

1. Why Power Conversion Matters

TOPENS swing gate openers can operate on AC mains power, solar power, or hybrid AC + solar backup, depending on the model.

Different installation environments — such as residential driveways, farms, rural areas, or locations with unstable grid power — often require changes to the original power setup. Understanding proper power conversion methods helps prevent incorrect wiring, insufficient battery charging, and unstable gate operation.

2. Common Power Conversion Scenarios

2.1 Converting AC Power to Solar Power (or AC + Solar Backup)

This is the most common conversion scenario, especially where AC power is unavailable or unreliable.

Typical required components:

a. Solar panel for a 24V battery system

b. Solar charge controller or TOPENS UPS01(A) Uninterrupted Power Supply

c. 24V battery system (if not already installed)

Important notes:

  • The UPS01(A) functions as both a power supply and a solar charge controller.
  • A 24V battery system is mandatory. Two 12V batteries can be connected in series to achieve 24V.
  • Supported battery types include lead acid, GEL, AGM, and flooded (deep cycle) batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are generally not supported, except LiFePO4.

Power modes explained:

  • Solar-only: The gate operates entirely on battery power, and solar panels are the only charging source.
  • AC + solar backup: AC power is the primary source, while solar power maintains battery charge and provides backup during outages.

2.2 Converting Solar Power to AC Power

This conversion is typically simpler and depends on whether the gate opener includes a built-in transformer.

Models without a built-in transformer:

  • An external AC power supply such as UPS01(A) or DPS180-U is required.

Models with a built-in transformer (AT1202 / AT602 / KD702):

  • If solar power was previously used only to charge backup batteries, conversion can usually be completed by removing the solar kit.

Note: Power requirements vary by model. Always confirm the exact opener model before selecting accessories.

3. Model-Specific Power Conversion Guidelines

3.1 Converting AC to Solar (or AC + Solar Backup)

(1) XD852 / XD851 / XD552 / XD551

(2) JY9132 / A8132 / A5132 / AT12131 / AT6131 / A8131 / A5131

  • Equipped with UPS01(PLUS), which supports direct AC power and direct battery charging.
  • Solar-only operation:
    • Requires 24V 12Ah battery + 20W solar panel
  • AC + solar backup (AC outages < 8 hrs/day):
    • Requires 24V 5Ah battery + 10W solar panel
  • Recommended: TOPENS TSQ20W Solar Panel Kit

(3) PW802 / PW502 / PW302

  • Equipped with DPS180-U, which supports AC power only.
  • The DPS180-U AC-DC power supply cannot be used to charge batteries and is not compatible with the solar kit.
  • Solar-only operation:
    • Requires 24V 12Ah battery + 20W solar panel + solar charge controller
  • AC + solar backup (AC outages < 8 hrs/day):
    • Requires 24V 5Ah battery + 10W solar panel + solar charge controller
  • Recommended: TOPENS TSP30W Solar Panel Charging Kit, or TSQ20W Solar Panel Kit + TCS3 Solar Charge Controller

(4) A8

  • Includes a TS24-U adapter that connects to the control board and plugs into a standard AC outlet to charge the batteries.
  • Solar-only operation:
    • Requires 24V 12Ah battery + 20W solar panel + solar charge controller
  • AC + solar backup (AC outages < 8 hrs/day):
    • Requires 24V 5Ah battery + 10W solar panel + solar charge controller
  • Recommended: TOPENS TSP30W Solar Panel Charging Kit, or TSQ20W Solar Panel Kit + TCS3 Solar Charge Controller

(5) AT1202 / AT602 / KD702

  • Features a built-in transformer and operates directly on AC power.
  • AC + solar backup (AC outages < 8 hrs/day):
    • Requires 24V 7Ah battery + 20W solar panel + solar charge controller
  • Recommended: TOPENS TSP30W Solar Panel Charging Kit, or TSQ20W Solar Panel Kit + TCS3 Solar Charge Controller

Important installation notes:

  • The cables required to connect the battery and control board to the solar charge controller are not included in the solar kit (specification: 2C X 18 AWG).
  • Increase solar panel wattage and battery capacity if daily sunlight is less than 6 hours, or if additional accessories are installed (external receiver, Homelink remote control kit, exit wand, wired keypad, etc.).
  • Always follow the wiring diagrams and power limits specified in the model-specific user manual.

3.2 Converting Solar to AC

Models supporting direct solar-to-AC switching

  • XD852S / XD851S / XD552S / XD551S
  • AT12132S / AT6132S / AT12131S / AT6131S

These models include the UPS01(A) power supply and support seamless switching from solar to AC power without additional accessories.

Models requiring an external AC power supply

  • AD8S / AD5S / A8S / A5S / A3S

These models use the TS24-U adapter for battery charging and require an external UPS01(A) or DPS180-U power supply when converting to AC power.

Important:

  • The TS24-U adapter cannot be used to charge the opener directly.
  • The DPS180-U power supply does not support battery charging and cannot be used with the solar kit.

4. Final Recommendations

Before purchasing power-related accessories, always confirm your exact gate opener model and carefully evaluate the installation environment, including sunlight availability and expected power outage duration. When in doubt, selecting a higher-capacity battery or higher-wattage solar panel can help prevent power shortages and improve reliability.

A properly matched power configuration improves gate performance and reduces maintenance. For additional guidance or technical assistance, TOPENS Technical Support is available to help.
